Umpqua River Temperature
Monitoring Project
Planned for July through
September
The Partnership for
the Umpqua Rivers Watershed Council (PUR) will be conducting a temperature
study this summer in the Umpqua River between Hubbard Creek and Elkton.
In early July approximately thirty data recording devices will be
distributed in the bottom of the river channel where they will record and
store the water temperature every thirty minutes. The units will be
retrieved in the end of September and the data will be added to the PUR
Water Quality database.
For this study to
be successful it is essential that the data loggers are not disturbed and
PUR is seeking help from the public to meet this objective. The data
loggers are small, approximately the size of a fifty-cent coin and will be
anchored to the river bottom with a heavy block. A yellow marker and an
identification tag will also be attached to the anchor block.
In the event that
the unit is discovered and removed from the water, PUR personnel request
that the unit be replaced in the original location and that PUR be advised
of the date and time of the disturbance. In the event that the units
cannot be replaced in their exact original location, contact PUR to
arrange for the return of the unit to the PUR office.
The purpose of
this project is to learn more about the temperature dynamics of the main
river channel. This information will provide a better understanding of
water quality and fish habitat conditions in the river. For more
